All road users are being urged to take care whilst driving in school zones with Council’s Rangers now actively patrolling the designated areas.

Road users are reminded of the following rules*:

  • ‘No Parking’ means you can stop for two minutes to either pick up or drop off passengers, but you must remain within three metres of the car.
  • ‘No Stopping’ means no stopping at all times; not even to quickly pick someone up or to drop them off.
  • ‘Bus zones’ are dedicated zones to be used by bus drivers only.

*Please note that hours of operation may apply to some signs and the restrictions apply to the stated times only.

Leeton Shire Council’s Manager Planning, Building & Health Francois Van Der Berg said these rules are in place for the safety of all school zone users and should always be observed.

“We are committed to supporting local schools in Leeton in their efforts to make school zones safer. Members of the public are concerned about motorists disobeying dedicated bus zones, ‘No Parking’ and ‘No Stopping’ signs around the Shire’s schools and we hope the patrols will help reduce these offences,” said Mr Van Der Berg.

“Drivers dropping off children at or on school crossings or in school bus zones and disobeying parking rules are not only breaking the law but more importantly, posing a serious risk to their own and other children in the area,” he said.

To ensure better compliance, Council’s Rangers are now actively patrolling school safety zones in the Shire, encouraging motorists to park legally and avoid stopping or parking where it is not allowed.

Road users are being warned that traffic offences in school zones can result in fines and demerit points.

Council is also reminding the community that parking in front of driveways is strictly prohibited. Residents need to be able to enter and exit their property safely at all times.
