It has been a great opportunity for me to attend some of the service club’s changeovers over the past few weeks. Clubs such as Rotary, Lions and Inner Wheel, for example, do so much good for our community with a lot of it done behind the scenes by tireless volunteers. Every cent they make eventually returns to our Shire and they all need to be congratulated for the valuable work they continue to do.

The 2023 Art Deco Festival has been and gone and the event continues to grow. I went to a lot of events and met people from all over Australia who had made their way to Leeton for the weekend. Every single person was glowing in their praise of the event and Rose from the Historic Hydro has told me she already has bookings for next year! It was pleasing to see a lot of local businesses get into the swing of things with a lot of shop windows in Pine Ave done up in an Art Deco theme. A special mention to all the staff and dozens of volunteers who made the weekend a success!

Fingers crossed that next year the Roxy will be open to welcome visitors for the 2024 Art Deco Festival. It is encouraging to see the hive of activity taking place in the Roxy and I will repeat the message that we WILL get it done, we WON’T blow the budget and we WANT your support. I see too, that the new slide at the pool is taking shape and should be open for the summer. I was asked on radio last week whether I would be the first person down the slide in my speedos’, but I can assure you that won’t be the case!  We are looking at some type of competition to determine just who will be the first person down so stay tuned for that.

The annual Bank Holiday Bowls Carnival was held last weekend with teams from places such as Melbourne, Sydney, Bourke and Kiama converging on Leeton to take on local bowlers.  The event has been running continuously since 1964, with only a break for COVID. The event is good for our local economy and clubs and the famous cliché that bowls was the winner was echoed over the greens.
