The Leeton Town Ovals came alive on Wednesday, 18 September 2024, as students from across the Shire gathered for Council’s highly anticipated ‘Game Changer’ Gala Day. The event was deemed a tremendous success, with a great turnout and strong participation from students.

The Gala Day marked the conclusion of the second iteration of Council’s ‘Game Changer’ program, which kicked off in May and engaged over 180 children from seven schools in the Shire. The program aims to foster the development of basic sports skills in a safe and positive environment, encouraging teamwork and participation across a range of sporting activities.

Students showcased their newly acquired skills during the Gala Day by competing in a series of mini soccer games, where teams were made up of a mix of students from various schools and age groups. This format encouraged collaboration, sportsmanship, and the building of friendships amongst participants.

The ‘Game Changer’ program is a collaborative effort, with Leeton Shire Council partnering with the NSW Office of Sport – Riverina Murray to deliver this positive initiative. Sessions were led by Maddy Routley and Rachael White, with resources funded by the NSW Office of Sport and schools supported by Beyond Blue’s ‘Be You’ program, which provides ongoing wellbeing resources.

Special thanks goes to Rod Martin and The Rapid Relief Team for their generous provision of fruit, drinks, and a BBQ at the Gala Day that kept everyone energised throughout the day.

Council is proud of the continuing success of the program, which not only promotes sports participation for students from diverse backgrounds but also ensures that all children, regardless of their circumstances, can enjoy and reap the benefits of physical activity.
